Did you know these TV shows were based on books?

We all know that many movies are based on books, but did you know several television shows we know and love are based on them as well?

In the future, I hope to be able to post some comparisons between books/book series and their tv equivalents. Here are some of the books turned television series I've been able to come up with...

The Vampire Diaries
Based on the novel-series: The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith
This show is based on a love triangle between a girl named Elana, and two vampire-brothers named Stefan and Damon.

Gossip Girl
Based on the novel-series: Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar
Based on the lives of the young and rich in Manhattan's Upper East Side where, due to the mysterious Gossip Girl, nothing is secret. In our modern world of technology, Gossip Girl stops at nothing to broadcast everyone's dirty laundry.

Pretty Little Liars
Based on the novel-series: Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard
This series just recently aired for the first time, and is based on a clique whose ring leader goes missing. About a year later, even though they all suspect her dead, their leader starts sending mysterious messages to individuals in the group.

True Blood
Based on the novel-series: Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris
This HBO series revolves around the lives of vampires and humans living together in  a small Louisiana town.

FlashForward
Based on the novel: FlashForward by Robert J. Sawyer
The series begins with a world-wide blackout, where everyone sees a vision or "flash forward" of a day in the future. Not knowing what caused the blackout, the plot revolves around figuring out why it happened, and if it will happen again.

Dexter
First Season loosely based on the novel: Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
Based on the life of Dexter, an employee of the police department who is also a serial killer.

These are just the beginnings of a list of television shows based on books. There are many more, and if anyone knows of any, please feel free to add to our list by leaving a comment.
